03 / Purpose

Why build
an archive?

The archive gives permanence to things that are normally temporary.

01

To document

The built environment is most often recorded after the work is finished. CBA attends to what happens before that moment.

02

To preserve

Knowledge lives temporarily—in hands, conversations, drawings, mockups and unfinished assemblies. The archive gives it continuity.

03

To observe

Ordinary details become significant when considered carefully and preserved over time. Attention is the first archival act.

04

To share

The archive is intended for builders, architects, designers, photographers, students and anyone interested in how things are made.

“The extraordinary isn’t created.
It’s noticed.”
